The Political Archives

Every major political event since independence, organised by era — what happened, and what it explains about politics today. Inferences are clearly marked as interpretation; events are documented record. Protests and movements live on Conflicts & Protests; election data lives in Elections.

1947

Independence & Partition

British India divided into India and Pakistan; ~15 million displaced; Gandhi's assassination follows in Jan 1948.

What it explains today: Partition's demographic anxieties still shape citizenship and minority politics today.

1950

The Constitution commences

Drafted by the Constituent Assembly (Ambedkar chairing the Drafting Committee); universal adult franchise from day one.

What it explains today: A poor, largely illiterate country chose full democracy — the baseline for every right claimed since.

1951–52

First general election

17 crore voters, ~173 parties; Congress wins 364 of 489 seats; turnout 44.87%.

What it explains today: Established the Election Commission's machinery that still runs every election.

1956

States Reorganisation Act

States redrawn on linguistic lines.

What it explains today: Language remains India's deepest political fault line — from Tamil Nadu's anti-Hindi politics to statehood movements.

Archive policy. Events enter this timeline only when documented in official records or multiple independent accounts. The What it explains today notes are analytical context, labelled as interpretation — the same discipline the rest of the platform applies to every number.
